Presentation Outline:
Endometriosis is an incredibly common condition affecting around 1 in 7 women during their life. Endometriosis commonly causes non-cyclical pelvic pain, severe period pain, pain with urination, pain with defecation, painful intercourse and severe fatigue. Currently non-surgical treatment options are limited – either due to a lack of significant symptom reduction or to side effects that people can’t tolerate. Many women report turning to acupuncture and Chinese medicine and having significant improvements. While acupuncture has been shown to have a beneficial effect on endometriosis related pain, there is less research in English about potential Chinese herbal formulations. Gui Zhi Fu Ling wan is a commonly used classical formula in the treatment of pelvic and abdominal pain, and in many places around the world is the most common TCM formula for endometriosis. This talk will cover the background on endometriosis – including both biomedical and TCM understandings, as well as discussing the role of Gui Fu Ling Wan and the results of our recent, as yet unpublished, clinical trial on a modification of the classical Gui Zhi Fu Ling wan formula on endometriosis pain and symptoms.
